Mkuze Falls Game Reserve offers a breathtaking location to decamp to, where you can soak up the sights of the wildlife-rich surrounds, in peace and comfort. Each thatched suite offers exceptional scenes of the namesake waterfall. At the waterfall’s base, you’ll see hippos bathing in the pool, while endearing game animals lap up the water at its edges. Mkuze Falls is truly rich with wildlife, birdlife, rolling mountains, and, as one would expect, the sight and sound of the cascading waterfall.
Game are free to roam and you’ll often open the door of your lodge to see Kudus and other buck grazing in your garden. Experienced guides will track spoors during game drives and walks to find you our Big Five residents, as well as iconic towering giraffes and countless birdlife. Create incredible memories with your family, that will last a lifetime.
All the suites offer complimentary teas, coffees and bottled water.

Dos and Don'ts on a game drive
- Do listen to your guide as he will provide the best advice applicable to your game drive, ensuring you have the best possible experience.
- Don’t try to call the animals to get their attention.
- Don’t exit the vehicle unless at a designated spot, and only with the approval of your guide.
- Don’t litter.
- Please note: the animals in Mkuze Falls Reserve are wild and sightings are not guaranteed. No two days are the same. Your guide will use their experience and knowledge to try to provide the requested sightings.
- Don’t feed the animals. It’s against the rules to feed them. If any of the animals associate humans with food, they may become dangerous and will have to be put down. They are capable of feeding themselves in their natural habitat.
- Do ask questions. There is so much to learn.
- Do have fun!
- Do make it a memorable experience.
Weather and game drives
Game drives are in our open 4×4 game drive vehicles driven by one of our rangers. Warm jackets are required for winter/cooler days (we do have knee blankets in the vehicles) and rain jackets for summertime. We do supply ponchos but that might not be sufficient.
Snakes, spiders and scorpions
The nearest hospital is a fair distance away, so please take care when moving around the lodge. Should you encounter any of the above-mentioned creatures, do not engage. Remove yourself from the room or facility, and report it to management so that safe removal of the animal can be organised.
Dietary requirements
We offer our guests the best vacation possible, and this includes ensuring your dining experiences are first-rate. We will always endeavour to accommodate all dietary requirements. Please let us know when you make the booking if you have any dietary requirements or allergies, so we can brief our chefs.
Child-friendly
Children of all ages are welcome. Children under 6 will not be allowed on game drives unless parents have the sole use of the vehicle. Vehicle exclusivity must be pre-booked at an additional cost.
Cell coverage and WiFi
We have limited cell coverage but we do have free WiFi available to our guests in the chalets, as well as all communal areas.
How do I get there?
You need to take the R66 towards Nongoma/Ulundi from the main town of Pongola. Drive for about 38km. On your left, you will see the government board for Mkuze Falls Game Lodge. Turn right onto the gravel road and go through two gates till you get to the main gate. Sign in at the main gate and follow the markers to the main lodge.
What should I pack?
- Casual, neutral-coloured clothes work best and comfortable shoes are essential. Long pants, a warm fleece and a windproof jacket are ideal for the game drive, particularly in the cooler winter months.
- During summer days and many autumn and spring days, shorts, t-shirts and a swimming costume will suffice, and sandals are more than adequate. Don’t forget your rain jacket, especially in the summer months, which is our wettest season.
- A cap or hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and binoculars are recommended all-year-round.
Is your accommodation wheelchair friendly?
We have one chalet that is wheelchair friendly.
